Welcome to France!
Tucked away on a street that hosts the majority of Beijing’s night clubs is a gem called: Paradox. As a long time resident of Beijing for 7 years, this was the FIRST time I ever ventured past the clubs on this street and was also stone sober. It was essentially a “paradox” in and of itself. That’s why the name fits perfectly for this restaurant. It sits close to the infamous gentrified nightclubs of Gongti packed with loud music and fake liquor. Yet Paradox has the feel of a French Bistro with gentle music, soft white lights, and REAL wine and liquor. This is why I love Beijing, it never ceases to surprise me! ?
Upon entering the intimate courtyard, you immediately are in a beautifully done French Bistro. It was intimate, friendly, and it transported you outside of Beijing, right to the heart of France.
They had an extensive list of French wines for all budgets. One of the things I liked best was that the servers came around with a huge chalkboard, listing the specials of the day. This gave them that so often forgotten touch of class, often missing in Beijing.
The food was excellent. We had several platters and copious amounts of wine. Every platter was beautifully done with a variety of meats; so extensive, I had no idea what I was eating but it was delicious.
Even the bread was served with real butter and an olive oil paste that was heavenly.
The staff were friendly, welcoming, and aimed to please. Ludo the manager from Marseilles was extremely amiable and spoke: Chinese, English, and French. You just felt like you were at home and not anywhere near the subzero temperatures of the Beijing winter.
I will certainly be going back very soon. As I have not touched enough of the menu and based on the expressions of the other diners: the steak must be amazing because their eyes were salivating when it was put in front of them.
